The winning penalty kick was fired by Alexander Callens at Portland's Providence Park as New York City's first final ended in victory.
New York City FC were ahead in the 41st minute through Valentin Castellanos' header, however, Felipe Mora levelled for Portland Timbers in the 5th minute of additional time as the encounter extended into extra-time.
With no winner after a total of 120 minutes, Sean Johnson made two beautiful saves denying Mora and Diego Valeri before Callens sealed a historic first title.
Since their first Major League Soccer (MLS) season in 2015, New York City FC have signed very successful European players including former Spain sharpshooter David Villa, Italy midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo and former England midfielder Frank Lampard along its squad.
