Howe will stay at the St. James' Park until 2024.
He will be replacing Steve Bruce after being without a job since he left AFC Bournemouth in 2020 following relegation.
The English pro football manager said his new job is a "wonderful opportunity" as well as admitting there's "a lot of work" to be done as the Magpies are 19th on the Premier League table with five points away from safety after 11 matches.
He told Newcastle United's official website: "This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us."
Howe watched from the stands as Newcastle United played 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.
He further said: "I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players."
