David Moyes' men gained entry into the last-16 round of the tournament after Manuel Lanzini netted an early goal in the 9th minute.
It was the Argentine's first goal in 12 months.
Despite the introduction of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood, the Red Devils were unable to turn the game around their way.
For Manchester United and Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it was an early end of their hopes of clinching the first available silverware of the season.
Manchester United last lifted a trophy back in 2017.
